Wedding Rituals of Tamil Matrimony

It is a day when a boy and girl start their new life, called marriage life after completing all wedding rituals successfully. Traditionally, Groom wears two piece clothes which are made from silk known as Veshti and Angavastram. The Veshti is the lower part of garment, either that is dhoti or lungi. And wear a white shirt. Angavastram is a long piece of clothes that draped around the neck. The Bride wears traditional bright color kajeevaram  silk saree and a heavy gold jewellery.

Mangala Snaanam

It is a purity bath. A married woman or sumangalis prepared a paste of turmeric, sandalwood and kumkum. The significance of this bath is to refresh the couple’s bodies to decrease stress and initiating good energy for a long wedding process.

Gauri Puja

This ritual is performed by the bride only. An idol of the Goddess Gauri, who represents purity, austerity and virtue, is placed on a plate containing rice and kumkum. After Mangala Snaanam ritual, Bride dressed up with wedding dresses and short prayer is performed by the bride to the Gauri idol wishing for a happy married life ahead.

Kasha Yathra

A groom’s family and relatives arrive at the wedding venue A groom grabs umbrella, walking sticks and a few food items to go off Kashi. The bride’s father intercepts him outside the wedding venue and makes him see the virtues of the domestic life as opposed to hermit one and promise to give his daughter to him in marriage. Then the groom accepts the marriage proposal and come back to get married to the wedding venue.

Pada Puja

when groom reached at the wedding hall, Bride’s parents’ washes the groom’s feet with the holy water, sandalwood paste, milk and kumkum.

Maalai Maatral

This is the first step to start an actual wedding ritual. Bride and groom exchange Flower garlands.

Oonjal

It is swing & couple are sitting on it. The woman of family surrounded the swing and sing oonjal Pattu songs and the elder of the families come one by one & feed banana and milk to the couple and bless them for a happy future.

Kanyadanam

After that bride father take the one of the saree and tie with the groom’s angavastram, Then the couple is seated on the designated spot. A coconut is put the brides hands supported by the father’s and offer the groom together. The significance of this ritual is to request the groom take of their daughter for whole life.

Muhurtham

After Kanyadanam, The groom’s family represents nine yard silk saree to the bride. It is a symbol of acceptance of the bride in to groom family and then bride goes to change the saree.

Saptapadi

Finally the time is come, when a boy and a girl bring forward a new journey as a husband & wife called marriage life. The bride and groom hold each other’s hand & go around one by one following each other holy fire seven times. The priest chanted Vedic mantras

Reception

Same day in the evening, a formal reception is held where the guests present wedding gifts and blessing.

Sammandhi Maryathai

Families exchange gifts after that a time is coming when bride prepares to leave her parental home. It is bid an emotional goodbye to her parents.

Griha Pravesham

After Sammandhi Maryathai, Finally a newlywed couple reached at the groom’s home where groom’s mother performs a small arti. It is a warm welcome to the couple.

Valeyadal

It is a formal introduction of bride with the members of groom’s family where they present gifts. Many plays are performed which are also a part of customs

Maruvidu Varudal

After days, a newlywed couple visits bride’s parental home here they are welcomed with the great enthusiasm and served the delicious food. Then the bride’s parents present some gifts to couples. This marks the end of the formal Tamil wedding celebrations.
